After the Financial crises of 2008 and the following Great Recession, nonprofits have struggled with severe funding cuts from state and Federal governments, decreases in volunteerism and donations, and an increasing need for the services that they provide. This study contributes to the growing field of applying traditional business strategies to nonprofit organizations, which previously tended to avoid these practices for fear of being seen as corporate. First, this study aims to find out which areas of western North Carolina nonprofits have changed due to these budget cuts, and if so, how. Second, this study revisits several organizations six months later to further investigate the adaptations that have been made and the strategies that have been employed. Patterns are identified to illustrate effective and ineffective business strategies that the organizations are employing. Interviews were conducted with nine subjects. Overall, the results were very positive, with much growth reported, however, some organizations have needed to downsize their facilities, clientele, or charge their clients for services that were previously free. The results also showed that local western North Carolina nonprofits are doing everything they can to keep up with the needs of the community. The state’s financial contribution to these nonprofits is likely to decrease in future years, so it is very important to determine which strategies best help an organization to not just thrive, but to grow to serve more needs in the community.
