There is a certain pleasure that can be found in novel situations, in experiencing something fresh. Moving beyond what is normally comfortable and being involved in a mutable experience can create joy and indelible diversions. This notion of moving beyond what is in a persons normal scope of behavior was coined by Guy Debord, a twentieth century Marxist theorist and writer, under the name “Dérive”. Debord thought of Dérive as a “a mode of experimental behavior linked to the conditions of urban society: a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiances”1. Through the use of instructions generated by means of a mobile Android application, a user can drift through cities following routes, actions, and channels previously unconsidered or imperceptible. The goal is not where the person is going. The goal is not new novel destinations, though they may occur. The goal is to change how people think of “going” as an idea. The journey itself is where people can find the pleasure and joy of change, rather than the end itself.
